Home of the prestigious $1 million Preakness Stakes, the race that determines whether the Kentucky Derby winner will have a chance to grab the Triple Crown. Preakness Stakes has a rich history, it was first run two years before the Derby, in 1873, and was named after the horse who won the 1870 Dinner Party Stakes, Preakness.
Preakness Stakes Contenders at Pimlico Race Course
Pimlico Race Course is a horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes.
Pimlico officially opened in the fall of 1870, with the colt Preakness winning the first running of the Dinner Party Stakes. Three years later the horse would have the 1873 Preakness Stakes named in his honor. The track is also noted as the home for the match race in which Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in the second Pimlico Special, on November 1, 1938, before a crowd of 43,000. It is currently owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.
The Preakness has had some memorable horse race winners with great photo finishes. Who could ever forget horses like Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Tabasco Cat, or Smarty Jones.

2011 Preakness Stakes Winner
Shackleford held off a late charge by the 2-1 favorite Animal Kingdom, spoiling yet another Triple Crown try and beating the Kentucky Derby winner by a half-length. Shackleford, who led into the stretch in the Derby two weeks ago, finished the job at 12-1 odds, covering the 1 3/16 miles in 1:56.47.
2010 Preakness Stakes Winner
The winner of the 2010 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Maryland is Lookin at Lucky, with First Dude coming in second and Jackson Bend following right behind at third place.
2010 Kentucy Derby winner Super Saver, under rider Calvin Borel, was the favorite to win and was right behind First Dude in second for the first three quarters of a mile, but then tired and fell back to eighth place. It was only the second time in eight career races that Super Saver did not “finish in the money.” Borel said, “He just came up empty.”
2009 Preakness Stakes Winner
Rachel Alexandra led by a head at the quarter and half-mile poles. She stretched it to a half-length at the three-quarters pole. She was ahead by four lengths going down the stretch. In the end, the 9-5 favorite won by a length in her first race against the boys.
Jockey Calvin Borel all but guaranteed victory in the Preakness Stakes and, boy, did she deliver, becoming the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
2008 Preakness Stakes Winner
Big Brown charged to the lead turning for home and then cruised down the stretch to win the Preakness on Saturday, still perfect and squarely pointed toward thoroughbred racing's first Triple Crown in 30 years.
Big Brown might be the best horse this year in a middling field of 3-year-olds. Or the colt could be remembered as one of the greatest of all time.

Curlin heads back to the barn with his flowers and Preakness winner's blanket.
